First of all I wanted to wish you a happy new year for 2017!
It seems like “happy” people are a different cut of the cloth from everybody else.
Happy people think differently.
Happy people have certain rituals, behaviors and see the world differently from the rest of us.
Or so it seems?
The truth is that happy people are no different than the rest of us. They just happen to know a couple of secrets, techniques and strategies that give them the winning edge on a daily basis. It’s not predicated on talent, it’s not predicated on having more opportunities than you. It’s not determined by circumstances and it’s not vindicated by what material possessions.
It’s all about how they think and respond every single day!
So in the spirit of January and a new year of wondrous opportunity, challenges and discovery let’s begin to dig deeper into these “happy” people. The first assumption we need to clear is that happiness is not an everlasting emotion that survives 24 hours a day. Happiness is a by-product of many different combinations of mindset, productivity, growth, contribution that stem from our belief systems.
Happiness is not a permanent emotion. It comes and goes just like the rest of our feelings such as sadness, guilt, frustration, joy and many more to name. So the real question is how do we experience the emotion of happiness itself more often in order to empower our lives?
Unfortunately many of us look for the quick fixes and they never last. Slamming down that bottle of booze or escaping the night will only delay our current reality. So the real power of the journey comes by looking at more long-term strategies that can empower us for the long haul.
So let’s dig into 7 simple secrets that happy people apply every day to live an extraordinary life.
1. Happy people have a purpose and meaning in life
The thing about happy people is that they do not accept the norm. They know that they are not just here to fill space or be a background person in somebody else’s dream. Happy people realize that nothing would ever be the same if they did not exist.
Every single place on Earth would be different if they weren’t here to leave their mark. Happy people take the time to contemplate, define and consider what their purpose is each day. It is known that most people do not feel settled without a clearly defined purpose for each day.
Purpose begins with making small and simple decisions.
Can you decide to clean up your room?
Can you decide to make a career change?
Can you decide to take control of your nutrition and training?
2. Happy people apply daily strategies that create happiness
Most of us assume that happy people and unhappy people are just born the way they are. The truth however is that both the happy and unhappy person does things that produce and reinforce their moods. It really does come down to how we choose to look at our daily situation. Happy people see the positive out of everything and unhappy people may lean more towards the negative of a situation.
It is shown that both the unhappy and happy person have similar circumstances. The difference is demonstrated in the amount of time spent thinking about the negative outcome. The happy person allocates their attention to finding a workable solution and taking action towards solving it. The unhappy person ponders the pain they experience and let it boil within them.
So how much time are you spending on negative thoughts?
It’s a choice.
3. Happy people do not have to win every single time
Happy people tend to be less attached to outcomes than others. Perhaps it comes down to life experience and wisdom, but they often give it their best shot and are happy regardless of the outcome. It’s great to have a competitive spirit and it is important to take our adventures seriously. But equally important is our ability to realize that our ‘championship belt’ isn’t all who we are.
There is more to us than our scoreboard of victories and defeats. We are more than just the sum of our accomplishments and things to show off. There is who we are, our character, what we give to the world and how we inspire others. So don’t be too caught up in the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly antics that can cloud our vision of who we are.
We are who we decide to be.
It’s not always about winning because failing can lead to learning more.
4. Happy people cultivate empowering friendships
I am sure you can think of the one person in your life that always makes you happy. When you are around them it seems like everything is just that much better. Not only should you be striving to grow and cultivate happiness within yourself and you should find winning team players to be on your side. As humans we strive in teams and communities and happy people cultivate empowering friendships.
Find people in your life who have goals and dreams. Who we spend our time with is extremely important and can be a matter of life and death. The right friend will support you and your dreams. A great friend will not be afraid to give you proper constructive criticism to help you grow.
If you want to be happy then hang out with happy people right? 🙂
5. Happy people have a healthy sense of self-awareness
Self-awareness is a big topic that’s been brought up in many circles on the internet. As we grow and get more experiences in life we learn more about who we are. We become more self-aware about our strengths, weaknesses and life expectancy.
We begin to see that time is not abundant and that the clock is ticking. For some this can create worry and anxiety, but for happy people it means they can use their time more effectively.
So how can you apply this to your life?
Start with paying deeper attention to what comes natural to you.
Be honest about what you genuinely like and don’t like.
You don’t have to always be politically correct.
Be you ;P
6. Happy people dream big and have realistic expectations
This is a great concept to apply because so many people get buried by their own expectations. So many people set large goals in order to derive motivation to conquer their goals. They set goals like “in 90 days I will make 6 figures” or “in 150 days I will win the Olympics”. Now this is a great mentality to have as long as it is met with an equal respect for realistic timing.
It’s not that the goal is not achievable, it’s that most people underestimate the sheer amount of work, time, luck and other factors that come into play. Even myself creating content and trying to make an impact to the world. It really is one day at a time. Last year I made a viral video that doubled the fan base and it may take another 500 videos or 1000 articles before I get another big hit.
I have realistic expectations about my daily growth that align with my big dream to empower millions of people worldwide. It may not happen in 90 days, or even 900 days, so if I was to expect it to happen overnight I would burn out.
Don’t get burned out by your expectations and realize it usually takes a lot longer to get what you want in life.
Happy people dream big and they have realistic expectations to when it will happen.
Work hard, be patient and let it happen! 😀
7. Happy people contribute back to society
Happy people don’t keep all the toys to themselves.
Happy people love to give back to others and there are many forms of giving. Some people love to donate to charity while others find that one person they can take under their wing and mentor them to a better life. The happiest people in life grow and achieve their goals but they also give back.
If you find yourself unsettled even when you have achieved your goals, then consider a form of contribution. Look for ways that you can help others. For me, I found a way to grow and give at the same time. I love to read, train, workout, mentor and create content. On a daily basis, I try to find ways to challenge myself and grow.
The beautiful thing is that you can decide how you want to apply any of these simple secrets.
You are your own unique individual with your amazing story to share.
I wish you a lovely year and I look forward to talking again with you very soon.
