Do you get pissed off when someone criticizes you?
This is a question you should take the time to contemplate. When was the last time you received criticism, whether it’s good or bad and how did you react? Because how you respond is a strong indicator of how much you allow the ego to run your life.
Your response to criticism matters
If your initial reaction is to get mad, defend your position or ignore the criticism then it just means you are human. In fact, the best rule in life to follow in life is to do what you want and not get bogged down by political correctness or other people’s standards of living. But let’s dig deeper into why being humble will certainly push you further into the stratosphere of your potential.
#1: Humble people are willing to change
The one thing we know about the ego is that it loves to preserve itself. Whenever you challenge the ego, you challenge its existence. The ego is easily threatened and likes to think highly of itself. The problem we face when we let the ego run our lives is that it ignores the principle of change. Change is inevitable and when we are unable to grow, adapt and think differently we fall behind.
Humble people have the advantage because they allow themselves to be vulnerable. They wrestle the demon in front of them and allow new solutions to be consolidated in their life. I am sure you have experienced a time in your life when you asked someone that you trusted for their opinion. If you have then you already possess a powerful skill in life. When are able to put our trust in others and receive their guidance and wisdom we can accelerate forward. The ego has a significant issue with taking advice from others because it only wants to trust itself.
The ego cannot learn the way the humble mind can 😉
#2: Humble people are capable of empathy
The ego wants it to be heard first before willing to listen to another person’s point of view. The ego has a deep craving to be heard and understood. Thankfully because we have the power of self-awareness we always choose to do the opposite. We can pro-actively decide to understand others first before making others understand us.
The humble person always has the advantage because they give people the gift of being understood. They can ignore their own inner voice and desire to speak when listening to others.
In all conversations taking place around the world people are doing one of the following:
A) They are waiting for their turn to speak
B) They are reflecting on how what the other person is saying reflects in their life
C) They ignore their own inner voice and fully listen to others
So which one are you doing? 😛
#3: Humble people are gracious when being corrected by others
A fantastic quote that summarizes this concept is “Correct a fool and he will despise you, correct a wise-man and he will appreciate you”. I found this to be true in my own life as when I was younger, I would easily get frustrated when being criticized by others. Whether it was positive, negative or constructive I wasn’t able to accept the gift of another person’s opinion of myself.
As I gained experience in life and learned that I didn’t know everything and I started to ask the better questions. In fact, I still have an initial response of emotion just like any other human being. I believe the difference is in the choice of how we choose to respond. It is a paradigm shift to be able to take a step back and realize the profound gift of another person’s effort to help us.
Not all criticism is justified and completely true. The true power comes in being able to express a sense of internal and external gratitude when somebody else offers their insight into who you are as a person. We all have an image of who we are embedded in our minds. Many of us identify deeply with the story we tell ourselves of who we are. Exploding success comes when we welcome new ideas to challenge the core of what we believe about ourselves.
I invite you to ask five people to give an honest criticism of who you are as a person and how you can improve
#4: Humble people channel the ego as a source of strength
The tool is not the problem but rather how the tool is used. It’s not that the ego is bad, evil or terrible in life. It’s that many of us do not keep the ego in check on a daily basis in order to channel it as a positive. The great thing about yourself and anybody else is that the humble edge can be applied instantly. We do not have to wait to make personal change and create massive happiness in life.
So how do we make the ego a source of success?
The simple trick is to not let the ego run its complete course without a strategic plan in place. The best examples I can think of are competing in anything that requires significant investment of your time. If your goal was to win first place at a bodybuilding show and you did not place first then your ego may get bruised.
Humble people allow themselves to feel any emotion that comes. They get upset, they get bruised, they feel robbed and torn just like anybody else would that “lost”. The difference with the unchecked ego is that it runs a rampage without any real applied solution to change the outcome.
The ego just gets mad while the humble soul channels that anger into a working solution. They allow the emotions to run its course before they calm down and plan their next victory. They recognize that the loss is not permanent and there is another day for a new moment of glory. The humble person channels all that energy and leverages it into a source of power.
Humble people transform the egos energy into strategy
They reflect, they study their opposition, and they look at their weaknesses and find ways to improve on their current piece of mastery. This is why a humble person can consistently make choices that empower them in the long term. Someone with a ‘big ego’ may not get the privilege of trying new things and change from the core.
But then again, I could be completely wrong. I would love someone to challenge my own concept of a humble human being 🙂
I hope you enjoyed our conversation today and perhaps my words will inspire you to invite new ideas into how you navigate this thing we call life 😛
Much love <3 <3
